Stabilizers are ultimately employed to protect the material’s appearance and end use performance.

  • Heat stabilizers – protect against heat degeneration in processing and/or in the end use of a product

  • Antioxidants – protect against oxidation degradation which occurs with all polymers in the presence of oxygen depending on the degree of heat, stress and so forth

  • UV Stabilizers – Protect the product against long term UV degeneration caused by the  sun’s ultra violet rays
    • HALS – long term stabilization. Hindered amine light stabilizers mop up the free radicals which are a result of UV exposure and can also sometimes also protect against heat degradation
      • 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine ring structure
  • UV Absorber – short term protection. The UV absorbers absorb light energy from UV rays as heat and dissipate it through the polymer matrix thus reducing the absorption of UV rays by the polymer.  This results in a slower weathering rate of the polymer

Crosslinking agents
